Satyrs, Fawns And Centaurs

What can anyone tell me about  Centaurs, Fawns and Satyrs? How do they differ? (I know a Centaur is part horse the others goat)

I'm wondering if a Fawn would be allowed under the rule system any idea what skills or uses he might have?

Probably a flourishing career in porno these days :P

Try reading some greek myth (not my speciality) I think you'll find bits in there.

As for rules - they would only be allowable if they existed in the world the game was set in - never heard of them in illyria but that would be down to Chrissy boy

I have a few books its specific storys I am after

Oh it should spell Faun

according to http://www.loggia.com/myth/satyr.html satyrs and Fauns are the same but depending on Roman or Greek myth

I'm thinking a costume would be a challenge (probably 2 people in it) for a Centaur but it would go well for Chapel Carnival? Especially with a small person on its back...

Faun and satyr are bipeds while centaurs are quadrupeds. Satyrs have goatish features like horns, beards, cloven hooves and goat like legs. If you wish to make a costume I would watch Dragnet, for a good example of goat leggings and how to do a goat dance ;)

Without reading up on them (because I am lazy) satyr are renowned for frolicking with nymphs, getting drunk and generally partying. Personally I can see why playing one would be appealing. Preferred musical instrument being reed pipes, often called panpipes. Anyone want to guess how they got their name?

I wouldn’t recommend getting two people to dress up as a centaur, pantomime horses don’t generally look very impressive and I can’t see one without its head looking any better, in my humble opinion.

Depending on the system I am sure either centaurs or satyr could be played, centaurs are likely to work best for tabletop or a system where you don’t end up falling over from laughter at the sight of someone with a horse’s ass. I would personally suggest skills such as endurance, consume alcohol and various out door type skills. Play instrument or singing could be good for the satyr while centaurs having some skill with club, bow or lance would be sensible.

I was thinking an armed centaur with bow. A faun would be easier to dress

A girl faun could be interesting, of course naming would be the simplest part. She would have to be a-Kate. But then there is a chance your fascination with these creatures is just you want one to fawn on you.

Okay that was dire.

I rather like the idea of playing a Pan based character. Chase pretty girls, drink wine, listen to pan pipe music...

On an interesting side note, Pan as god of the woods was associated with the feeling of fear experienced when outdoors alone at night, hence the derrivation of PANic from the mischief of Pan.

So I'm told...

- Then at least in death he shall achieve the modishness that escapes him in life...

Yep, there was an article about that very thing in an article in fortean times - judging by the lettes page for up to a year afterwards  the experience of panic, in the sense of unexplained irrational attacks of fear in the wilderness are far from rare.

I've experienced this feeling, and what interests me about it is that the raw fear comes first, followed by a rationalisation of why I ought to be afraid. This seems a little counter intuitive. Surely I should think 'Oh there could be an axe murderer behind that tree', then get scared, but in my experience fear comes first, followed by the thought 'Well there could be an axe murderer...'. Is this rationalisation the cause of the fear, or the explanation of something else (the mischeif od Pan if you like!)

Chris you seem silent on this. Would Fauns be allowed in your system?

Alex. Asamoth how about us as a trio of Fauns? Kind of like a Fauns stag night?

Why not just go as stags?  That way you could grapple with your antlers? It'd be great and good for your confidence!!!!! :P

Hey if I can get my stag hat back of Dave I could manage that easily, it might prove problematic at some points as I think it makes me slightly over 8 feet tall...

Naw the head is made from foam, the antlers are real though and trust me, it weighed a bloody ton. The bloke who played Hern in Robin of Sherwood was really on something, wearing a set of horns and managing to move through a forest, I had enough problems with Tattershall Park. :)
