I am one of the few roleplayers out there over a certain age that hasnt read the dragonlance books - I am kinda happy with that the way it is truth be told! Havnt read the dark tower series either cos it is huge and I am busy traking down the remaining necroscope/vampire world books by Brian Lumley another huge series but worth the effort

Bump, thread necromancy!!
Just though I'd add Joe Abercrombies "Best served cold" to the list - very good very inteligent fantasy in a believable world. Very dark and somwhat bitter - like choclate literature. Well worth looking at, must check out his other stuff.
Also Scott lynches "The lies of Locke Lamora" and the sequel "Red seas under red skies". Good swash buckling/caper type fantasys with a dark edge to the world.
The two authors above along with Robin Hobb give me hope for the fantasy genre.
Also must recommend Neil Gaimans American Gods - been out a few years now but worth reading - specially you Azamoth if you are reading this.

I am about to go and sit in the garden and finish Tehanu, the fourth book of Le Guin's Earthsea quartet, with its quality female character (but enough about that - rambled enough in sexism and setting topic). Lovely easy read. Have spent much of last year working through many books recommended/lent by fellow role players - gives an insight to where people are coming from. So keep the recommendations coming. Feel the need for something dark and intense, so might follow up Abercrombie, as not in the mood for Nietzsche.

Nearly forgot - read Muriel Grey's horror novels (she's the scottish woman with cropped bleached hair on Grumpy Old Women)- recently finished 'The Trickster'. A bit like Stephen King.

I enjoyed the grail quest series although by the time I came to the last one I didnt realy care any more - maybe it was because I'd taken a long time to get around to reading it after the 1st two. Not read Muriel Greys stuff, may have to look out for it. Currently reading vlad the impaler, in search of the real dracula by MJ Trow. Treads a nice line between dry history and examining the cutural significance of Dracula today. Got a couple of old stephen kings lined up next as well, probably starting with Christine and then Needfull things. What else, oh yeah, got loz "Pride prejudice and zombies" for her birthday as well as medical london (not for the squeamish).

I read the Raphael trail, which was quite good actually, if a bit 'pop'. Matt has lent me the last two books in the endless eddings saga of doom and I must confess that, although I thoroughly enjoyed the first ten, these last ones are like pulling teeth! I'm also reading a The Seeds of Time, which is a collection of short stories by John Windham of Triffids fame, definately worth a read. As far as psyche forming stuff, I think when my mind was mushy it was an odd combination of Robert E Howard, Robert Heinlein and Robert Pratchett... or was it Terry? Ain't altzheimer's a bitch?

As a long time contributer to the site can I have a moment for shameless plugging please? I have a short story in a book thats been published by a group of writers from Darlington. Its called "A strawberry in winter" and should be a good read - even the stuff thats not mine. Anyone like a copy let me know (should be about £6.50 but at least if you get em via me you wont be paying for postage unless of course you need me to post them to you).

You authorial hussy!
- of course I want a copy, if only to post caustic reviews on this site. No, I'm far too easily impressed by anyone who can write a vaguely decent story - writing scares me. Painting, carving, teaching large numbers of kids....fine, but writing ... urghh.
So put my name down for a copy. How much with postage?
