Board Games
« on: January 16, 2008, 02:06:04 PM »
Hi all,

Are there any board gamers on this site??  I've recently played several of my games with Chris Inkley (sorry - don’t know your avatar name) which went so well he threatened to buy his own copies.

These games were:

Vikings: Fire and Axe - Viking doing what they do best around Europe.
Carcassonne - A very clever strategy of city building.
The Red Dragon Inn - a silly game of drinking and gambling.
Mall of horror - Survive the zombie attack by voting your friends to be eaten!

For an independent review and pics, go to:  www.boardgamegeek.com

Im wondering if anyone in the Skeg area own and play board games, and if so which ones?

M

I have to say, Red Dragon is awesome. God I wish I had a 'not now I'm meditating' card in real life...

As for other board games, I'm quite a Settlers of Catan fan, but haven't been near anyone who owns a copy for over a year :(

Settlers is a great game; although not got a copy myself; a friend saves me the trouble.  Did you know theres a computer game version?  Kinda kills the point but its a fun filler!

I haven’t been playing board games for a while, though the Order of the Stick one was excellent, if you’re into that sort of humour. Munchkin, Spanc and Gloom are all very good in my opinion, though I am not sure if they really count as board games or card games. Illuminati is also excellent, though I haven’t seen that around for ages, which is a shame. Dungeonquest could be oodles of fun, even if the dungeon normally ended up the winner, but that just lead to the challenge.

I used to love GW’s Blood Bowl, though I haven’t tried the newer versions, think the second edition with Dungeon Bowl was the last I sampled, does anyone have any feed back on the later editions?
Ooo look a new PBM!

Heard good things about fire and axe but never had the pleasure yet.  Couldnt get into carcassone but it seems to be a cult hit with some people.  I have just bought zombies (the directors cut), running around an ever changing map horribly outnumberd by the undead and with other players trying to stuff you - great fun must get some of the expansion packs.  Have also played haunted house which is a relatively simple running through a maze game but with some lovely twists.  I was given gravediggers for christmas - a fairly simple gambling game based on grave robbery - maybe one to save for a beer and pizza night.

Whilst I'm on games I like but haven't got, has anyone got a copy of any of the slightly lame 'introductory' games from GW in the 90's such as Spacefleet, Kerrunch or Ultrmarines? I think they'd be good fora quick to learn laugh now and again.

Ahh OOTS the board game - brilliant and lots of fun; although I havent as yet tried the Weekend waster! Munchkin and its many incarnations is fun; Gloom is great - love he plastic cards and the theme (Pursued by poodles etc) is very cool.  Spanc?  Isnt that the cat-ladies in space game?  Never played it but been tempted to get a copy.

Illuminanti is still going strong with many expansions and a new version out (although i dont own it, a friend does - its pricy though)  Dungeon quest is not great - the instant death and having towait til everyone finished thinkg isnt my idea of fun.

Not played Bloodbowl for ages - for any game reviews, check out:  www.boadgamegeek.com

If you like those games i can heartily recommend the following:

Mall of Horror - prob talk about this before but its a "throw your friends out to be eaten" game.
Betrayal at house on the hill - This is an excellent game and one of my favorites (although i dont own it) - the idea is that a group (3-6) players enter a house (for the usual reasons - broken down bus; dark stormy night, etc) and wander around encountering scary things, collecting items, etc - until a "haunting" occurs (triggered by a dice roll and combination of events.  This haunting turns one of the players into the traitor - and the real game now begins.  Turns out this traitor has lured the others to the house to do away with them.  The traitor has a mission; the others the counter mission.  There is somethign like 50+ different missions plus lots of user made ones available for download.  Its a very very fun game!

Check it out on: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/prod/betrayalhouse
