Elven puzzle
« on: October 08, 2009, 11:24:12 PM »
For all fellow puzzle geeks out there, I'll post the first of a couple of classics we used on the last event.

Among the trees are three labelled bottles, one red, one white, one blue.
Inside each is a liquid. The elves tell you that one bottle contains a healing potion; the other two, poisons.
Just one of the labels is true.
The labels read as follows;

Red bottle
The potion is in this bottle.

White bottle
The potion is not in this bottle.

Blue bottle
The potion is not in the red bottle.

Work out which is the healing potion - one guess only.

Be logical... or be creative ...how would you decide which bottle?

The answer seems so obvious I almost think I must be mistaken.  As an alternative you could always beat the living crap out of the elves for being so irritating and then get one of them to decide which to drink.

Yep...and be skinned alive and have your hide tanned and used as a handbag by the elven mistress for your insufferable manners. Behave!
(I'm sure she has a whip somewhere and is hoping for rebellion...ooh...please!)
Come along others, don't be put off by smart-arses sat by a cosy fire - we were in a dark wood with guttering torches and twitchy twelve year old twins jumping around us- which bottle did the hobbit drink? Was it the right one? Have a go!

I reckon the blue one is telling the truth (if either of the others are then the other 2 couldn't both be lies)and therefore it's in the white bottle. Trouble is if I'm wrong I have no excuse cos i'm not outside in the cold and dark and surrounded by Cotterils. At least I don't die of poinsoning though, so I guess that's a plus

Oh this one is easy, I would carefully examine each of the bottles, noting the differences in the purity of the glass, any suspensions in the liquids, apply centrifugal force to try and create a residue in the base of the bottle, using my boot laces.

When I finally come to the conclusion this isn’t working and the rest of the party are considering making me drink from one bottle and thus either accepting or voiding that one…

I would either go with divination or go with RED as the colour is pretty and matches the bloodshot parts of my eyes.

I like puzzles, sometimes I am good at them and sometimes I am really bad, but they make me think and if I fail, only I am to blame :D I am sorry I missed the event, hopefully I will make one soon.
Ooo look a new PBM!

Hmmm...

First I'd ask the elves which one the potion was in.   -_-

Then I'd look at my character sheet to see if I had any "identify poison" or "identify potion" skills.

Then I'd ask if the healing potion would heal the poisons - if the answer was yes I'd drink all three.

Then I'd ask if I was allowed to taste a tiny drop of all three to see if I could identify any differences.

Then I'd probably sit down and try and cudgel my brain into solving what is obviously intended as a logic puzzle.  By the time I'd got bored of doing that, someone else would probably have already made the decision, thus relieving me of that burden.
